We just received word that the County has cancelled Kilauea Lighthouse Village’s Planning Commission hearing on May 22, and will reschedule it to another date. Currently, we are planning for a June 26th hearing. We’ll let you know when that date is confirmed and are hopeful that this will be the final date change.

We wanted to provide you with another update regarding Kilauea Lighthouse Village. Our hearing has once again been moved to May 22nd. This will be our final extension, so the hearing is confirmed for this date. As you know, we have worked tirelessly to address regulatory and community concerns and believe we have a plan and project that will contribute to the local community in many ways.

As an additional update to our project plan, through the request of the planning department and community, we have now included four work/live units to the property.  This is something that we had thought about doing initially, but our main limitation was always water which we have now been able to access.  The concept includes four separate units with the residential component located on the upper floor with the commercial space located at ground level.  Going back to this mixed used model of the past, it allows someone to live and operate their business out of the same location.

I would like to let you know that the Kilauea Lighthouse Village’s Class IV Zoning Permit Application hearing before the Planning Commission has been extended again to April 24th in order to provide additional time for comments from the Kauai Department of Public Works.  Public testimony is welcomed at this hearing and we expect a vote on our application this day.  I will post the agenda for the April 24th meeting when I receive it.  We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work with the County towards an appropriate hearing date.

By mutual agreement with the Planning Department, the Kilauea Lighthouse Village’s Class IV Zoning Permit Application hearing before the Planning Commission has been moved to March 27 to provide additional time for comments from all authorities and departments. Public testimony is welcomed at this hearing, and we expect a vote on our application on this day.  I will try and post the agenda on here as soon as I receive it.

We have received several inquiries for an update on New Town Entry Road.  At this time, New Town Entry Road sponsorship and functional classification approval decision remains with the County Public Works Department.  A County sponsorship would allow New Town Entry Road to be included in the State Transportation Integration Plan and be the first step toward applying for Federal funds for the road development.

We have also been working with the Planning Department regarding a request to incorporate some residential units into the project and will be presenting those plans at the hearing.  Updated site plans and renderings will also be presented at the hearing.

It’s been sometime since my last post and wanted to give a brief update on the project.  Our next hearing with the Planning Commission for the approval of our Class IV Zoning Permit has been re-scheduled to March 13^th, 2012.  Public testimony is welcomed at this hearing and we expect a vote on our application this day. 

We continue to generate a lot of interest from local businesses and are in discussions with several prospective tenants for the project.  We have also been making a lot of progress on the approval for the New Town Entry Road and hope to see it placed on the State’s Transportation Integration Plan this Spring.  Additionally, approval for our construction road is forthcoming from DOT which is great news!

We recently had our architect produce some additional eye-level perspective renderings for the project.  This should give you a better idea of how the proposed buildings will look in relationship to the historic stone buildings.  Please note that this does not include any of our proposed landscaping and only existing vegetation.  Links to these renderings are below.

Public Testimony Responses

I wanted to thank those of you who attended and testified in support of our project at our public hearing last week. Mahalo to all who submitted a letter of support, which totaled to almost 100 letters! We could not have come this far without your feedback and participation over the course of the past year.

The public hearing was officially closed on the 22nd and we are due to appear before the commission again on February 14th. We will be working diligently to address the questions and comments we have received from the various regulatory agencies up to the next meeting. We also are continuing to work with the DOT and County towards upgrading the functional classification of the New Town Entry Road, a crucial step in the funding and approval process.

I will be posting responses to various comments that came out of the public hearing on the website soon and will of course be at the next KNA meeting on Tuesday the 6th to provide updates on the road and address some of the comments that came out of the hearing.
